Hair Toppers in Raleigh, NC
If your own hair is thinning rather than gone, a topper adds density exactly where you need it and leaves the rest of your hair yours. Fitted and color-matched in our north Raleigh studio.
What a topper actually is
A topper is a hairpiece that covers the top of the head and clips into the hair you still have. It is not a wig. A wig replaces everything; a topper fills in the part, the crown, or a thinning patch, and blends into your own hair at the sides and back.
For a lot of women that difference matters enormously. Thinning at the part is the most common form of hair loss we see, and it is often the hardest to talk about, because from the front nothing looks wrong. You know. Everyone else sees a widening part in a bathroom mirror photo and says you look fine.
Who a topper suits
- A part that has widened gradually over a few years.
- Thinning at the crown while the sides and back stay dense.
- Hair that has come back finer after treatment or after a hormonal change.
- Anyone who wants more volume for an event without committing to a full wig.
If your hair loss is diffuse across the whole head, or the sides and back cannot hold clips securely, a wig is usually the better answer. We will tell you that honestly rather than sell you a piece that will not sit properly.
Choosing the base
Toppers are described by the size of their base, measured in inches, and the size decides how much of your scalp the piece covers.
- A smaller base is light and nearly invisible, and it suits early thinning right along the part.
- A larger base covers the whole crown and gives more coverage as thinning spreads. It is heavier, and it needs more surrounding hair to anchor to.
- Monofilament tops give a parting that reads as scalp, which is the whole point of a topper. Almost every piece worth wearing has one.
- Lace fronts matter if you want to wear the hair off your face.
Toppers attach with pressure-sensitive clips that grip your own hair. If your scalp is tender, tell us, because clip placement can be adjusted and some bases are far kinder than others.
Getting the color right
A topper sits in the middle of your own hair, which makes color matching less forgiving than it is with a wig. A wig only has to suit you. A topper has to disappear into what is already there, including any highlights and any grey.
This is the single best reason to come in rather than order online. We match against your hair in the room, in daylight, not against a swatch photograph on a screen that has its own color cast.
The collections we carry
We carry toppers and hairpieces from the same designers as our wigs, including the Ellen Wille Power Pieces range. Browse the collections:
Booking a topper consultation
Consultations for a new topper run an hour and fifteen minutes and cover the same ground as a wig fitting: what is happening to your hair, what coverage you need now, and what you will need if the thinning continues. You can try several bases and colors in one visit.
Toppers can be trimmed and blended into your own haircut here in the studio, which is usually what makes the difference between a piece that looks added and one that looks like hair. See wig services, or look at full wigs if coverage has gone beyond what a topper can do.
